Chemical Plant

During their shutdown period, we were asked by a long-standing client of ours to repair and refurbish two external bunds at their plant. The bunds, despite being next to each other, were both in need of extreme work to the floor, tanks and plinths.

Loss of containment had appeared via a crack in the floor of one of the bunds. Because of the chemicals kept in these bunds, we felt that a high build epoxy coating or chemical resistant polyurethane coating would not fix this issue and not protect the bund sufficiently in the future. The existing failed coating by vacuum controlled hand-held diamond grinders which are used to remove any laitance and expose the concrete substrate.

ACC Bulk a heavy duty, polyurethane repair mortar, was installed to the necessary areas that required making good. The product is trowel applied and is ideal as an underlayment or infill and can be applied at thicknesses ranging between 10 – 60mm

All surfaces were then coated with MasterSeal 7000CR, a system which is a highly chemically resistant. It is two component, crack bridge membrane based on Xolutec technology for waterproofing and concrete protection for structures in harsh conditions.

The system consists of a primer and 2 additional top coats to provide a full sealed surface, not only a highly chemical resistant film but one that is also impervious, durable, moisture tolerance, high water vapour permeability, and has excellent carbon dioxide diffusion resistance, high tear, abrasion and impact resistance and adhesion properties.

A flexible and chemically resistant mastic was used to infill the cracks in the floors surface and bund walls.

The client was delighted with the end result and both bunds are now available for us. ACC Flooring has a vast experience in the refurbishment of chemical bunds in hostile environments using a wide range of fit for purpose products.
